Free Crochet Pattern: Lazy Wave Hand Towel

We just finished remodeling our basement and I needed a hand towel for the new bathroom. I looked everywhere but couldn't find one I liked, so I decided to make one myself. But I had no idea what to make or what colors to use. The basement is neutral in different shades of beige, brown and grey. Then it hit me - I would copy the wavy design in the throw pillows on the couch.

It had been a long time since I'd made a chevron or ripple afghan so I needed a refresher course. I found this great 5 part video tutorial that helped me come up with this pattern.

Materials:
- Crochet hook size H - 5mm
- Worsted weight cotton yarn in colors of your choice (I used Loops & Threads Cotton Club yarn from Michaels because that was the only brand that made grey cotton yarn!)

Stitches:
- chain (ch)
- double crochet (dc)
- dc decrease: Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over, insert hook into next stitch and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, (there should now be 3 loops on the hook). Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.

I didn't write down when I changed colors, I just freehanded it.

With yarn color of your choice
Ch 51
Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 3 ch, [dc decrease, dc decrease, 1 dc in next 3 ch, 2dc in next 2 ch, 1 dc in next 3 chs] 3 times, dc decrease, dc decrease, 1 dc in next 2 ch, 2dc in last ch, ch 3, turn (45).
Row 2: dc in next 3 dc, [dc decrease, dc decrease, 1 dc in next 3 dc, 2dc in next 2 dc, 1 dc in next 3 dc] 3 times, dc decrease, dc decrease, 1 dc in next 2 dc, 2dc in last dc, ch 3, turn (45).
Rows 3-41: dc in next 3 dc, [dc decrease, dc decrease, 1 dc in next 3 dc, 2dc in next 2 dc, 1 dc in next 3 dc] 3 times, dc decrease, dc decrease, 1 dc in next 2 dc, 2dc in the 3rd ch of the ch 3 you made at the end of the previous row, ch 3, turn (45).
Finish off and weave in ends.

My Favorite Free Crochet Patterns: Chunky Cowl

Do you ever buy yarn not knowing exactly what you are going to make it into? I bought some extra bulky off-white yarn a couple of years ago. I tried making it into a drop stitch scarf, but I'm not much of a knitter and it didn't look right. So I tried to make it into a hat, but again it didn't look right. It had been so long that I lost the wrapper to the yarn and didn't even know what kind of yarn it was or what to do with it.

And then I found this free pattern. It was the perfect use for my yarn! It works up quickly and you only need to know two stitches - two stitches I had never used before so I learned something new in the process :) I've made two so far to give as Christmas presents and I'm working on a third. The third one I'm making using some grey yarn I've had sitting around for a while, but it's not bulky weight so I'm holding two strands of yarn together as I work.

I followed one of the suggestions given in the comments to the pattern. After I made the cowl, I gave it a twist before sewing the ends together. I love it!

Free Crochet Pattern: Autumn Garland

As we are remodeling our basement I keep thinking of ideas for decorating my sons' playroom. I am obsessed with making garland to decorate for each season or holiday. Garland isn't just for Christmas anymore!

I made mine in shades of orange, red and yellow, but I think it would also look pretty in shades of green. Here it the free pattern for my autumn garland.

Materials:
- Size E/4 crochet hook
- Worsted weight acrylic yarn in tan and brown for acorns and in colors of your choice for leaves
- Yarn needle
- Small amount of polyfil for stuffing acorns.

Stitches:
Chain (ch)
Double crochet (dc)
Double loop start or magic ring
Half double crochet (hdc)
Single crochet (sc)
Single crochet together/decrease (sc2tog)
Slip stitch (sl st)

With brown yarn, chain 315. This will be the base chain that you sew the leaves and acorns to.

Deliciously Disgusting: Halloween Food for Kids

Well, October is almost over and I have barely posted anything to my blog! But between returning to work full-time after maternity leave, my husband having surgery and my grandmother passing away after a long battle with Parkinson's disease, it has been a busy and hectic month to say the least.

With my children's Halloween party around the corner I was surfing the web for great food ideas and found these. I can't wait to get started :)

Zombie Marshmallows by the decorated cookie (she has ghost, mummy and skeleton marshmallows and a ton of other Halloween goodies on her blog!)

Eyeball Truffles by GourmetMom

Monster Cake by Betty Crocker (Betty has a ton of great Halloween recipes too!)

Pumpkin Party Mix by Betty Crocker

Mummy Mia Pizza by Parents.com (I think you have register as a member to see the recipe)

Peanut Butter Spider Cookies by Betty Crocker

P.S. I have some free crochet patterns to post as soon as I find time to photograph them!

Now you can stock up on patterns and get started making some Christmas gifts. I know I am going to try to make as many Christmas gifts as I can to save money this year. It seems like the Christmas spending gets more and more out of hand each year!

Yummy Crochet Giveaway Winner

And the winner is... JUDY! Congrats, Judy! I will be sending you an email shortly.

I also wanted to thank everyone for entering the giveaway and the kind comments that you left. You gals have some fantastic ideas for new patterns! Unfortunately, my maternity leave ends in 2 weeks (at which point I go back to work full time), so it may be a looooooong time before I'm able to design half the patterns I have on my list :(

I had a lot of fun working on Yummy Crochet so hopefully this isn't the last book that I contribute patterns to.

Hi, everyone! Here is a peak at my newest pattern for birthday cake, a candle, a cake server and party hats to fit a child and a doll. I'll have to have my niece over to model the party hats with her doll because I don't think I'll convince my sons to put on a pink hat :)

Yummy Crochet Giveaway and Free Pattern!

Some of you may remember this post from last year where I announced that I had some exiciting news. The time has come to let you know what it was...

Last year Kristen Rask, owner of Schmancy Toys, contacted me and asked if I would like to contrubute crochet patterns to her newest book. The book is called Yummy Crochet and features 12 different play food crochet patterns. Of course I said yes! Some of the first crochet patterns I ever designed were for crocheted vegetables so I chose to design the turnip and corn on the cob for the book. The book and kit (it comes with the materials necessary to make 2 of the projects) will be available at Barnes & Noble later this month.

Kristen was kind enough to provide a copy of the book so that I can do a giveaway. That's right, you can win a copy of Yummy Crochet!! All you need to do is leave a comment on this post with (1) your e-mail address (so I can contact you when you win) and (2) what crochet pattern you want me to design next. The winner will be chosen on September 15th. Good luck to everyone!!

To further celebrate the book's release (and because I love to crochet veggies!), I designed a free crochet pattern for bok choy. I hope you enjoy it :)

New Crochet Pattern: Baby Doll Carrier & Portable Bassinet

Here is my newest crochet pattern that my niece was kind enough to model for me -- a Baby Bjorn and a portable bassinet for baby dolls! My niece doesn't know it yet but she's going to receive the baby doll, diaper bag, baby bjorn carrier and portable bassinet for Christmas :)

Now your little girl can take her baby doll with her everywhere! The baby carrier can be used with the doll facing forward or facing your child. And this pattern only involves knowledge of a few basic stitches and is suitable for a newbie crocheter.

My favorite free crochet patterns: Pillow Pets

Everytime my sons see Pillow Pets on TV or in the store they want all of them! We have the tricerotops Pillow Pet but we would go broke buying the dolphin, frog and all of the other ones LOL! Here are some free patterns so that you can make affordable Pillow Pets. I haven't had time to try any of these yet but they look adorable :)

Sock monkey

Turtle

Unicorn

UPDATE: unfortunately the puppy and giraffe pillow pals patterns were taken down by the creator of those patterns. A few of you have written to me to ask if I have copies of those patterns and I just wanted to let you know that I do not.

UPDATE: Finished Items may be Sold!

Hi, everyone! Now that I've had my third child I just don't have time to make finished items to sell on Etsy. So I've decided to allow finished items made from some of my patterns to be sold. I've noted in each listing which patterns can be used to make finished items for sale, but for your convenience here is a list. This new policy applies if you've purchased these patterns from me in the past as well as future purchases. I may add more patterns to this list in the future. I get a few requests every week (that I can't accomodate) from customers wanting finished items and I've had customers ask me if they can sell the finished items fom my patterns, so hopefully this is a win win situation for everyone!

If you previously purchased this pattern from my shop and would like the update for free, just send me a Conversation through etsy. If you could please include the date that you purchased the baby doll with diaper bag pattern that would help me find you in my records. Thank you :)

New Crochet Pattern: Halloween Treat Bag

Okay, so this pattern isn't really new; it's actually one of the first patterns I ever created. But I usually stop listing it after Halloween and then relist it when fall approaches. I can't believe I am already starting to think about autumn! So sad that the summer seems to be half over :(

New Crochet Pattern: Home Tweet Home

Here is a sneak peek of a new crochet pattern that I will be adding to my shop this week -- it's a birdhouse with 3 sweet little birds. It has been finished for a long time but it finally stopped raining enough for me to photograph it in good lighting. I have some other free patterns and new pattern that I need to find time to post. The baby came a couple of weeks earlier than I was planning so it is a little hectic around my house lately. I'll post the new stuff as soon as I can :)

New Crochet Pattern: Sweet Pea Baby Doll

Here is another new pattern that I added to my shop last night. I finished this a while ago but had to find time during the daylight to photograph it. It is a baby doll that fits into a peapod bunting. I have a ton of ideas for more new patterns, but we'll see how many I can finish before the baby arrives. Only 30 more days to go!

New Crochet Pattern: Mama and Baby Owl

Here is a new pattern that I added to my shop last night -- a mama and a baby owl. The baby fits into a pocket on the front of the mama and is removable. The mama owl's feet are rings that are easy for baby to grasp. You could add some crinkly material to the inside of the wings, a rattle to the mama owl's feet, or a squeaker to the baby owl to make them more interactive for baby. I think they turned out cute :)

New Crochet Pattern: Cotton Coasters

The newest pattern in my shop is for 5 different types of cotton coasters: apple, pear, orange, acorn and tree stump. The pattern also includes directions for making the apple and pear look like a slice and for how to make the coasters double thickness.

These patterns make great teacher's gifts and housewarming presents!

New Crochet Pattern: Swiffer Mop Cover

It is that time of year to start spring cleaning! I don't really enjoy spring cleaning (who does??) but it is a necessary evil. To get into the mood, I crocheted up some reversible Swiffer mop covers in bright spring colors. They are smooth on one side for the Swiffer wet mop and textured on the other side for dry mopping. The pattern will be available in my shop soon :)

New Crochet Pattern: Venus Fly Trap

My sons are fascinated by Venus fly traps and have been asking for one for months. But after reading the care instructions, I decided that this plant is a little too high maintenance for our house. Which led me to crochet a Venus fly trap for them, complete with a tiny fly :) They absolutely love it! The pattern will be available in my shop in a day or two if you are interested.

My favorite free crochet patterns: Easter Chicks

I found this free pattern a couple of years ago and finally got around to making some for Easter decorations. I think they turned out cute!

I didn't have some of the recommended materials on hand so I used regular cotton yarn, a size E4 - 3.5mm crochet hook, 6mm black plastic safety eyes and I didn't make the feet out of pipe cleaners. I made the beak from orange cotton yarn as follows:

Rnd 1: 4 sc into an adjustable ring and pull the ring closed (4).
Rnd 2: 2sc in each sc around, sc in next 2 sc (8).
Finish off leaving a tail for sewing. Fold beak in half and sew to chick between the eyes.

I also made them each a nest using some left over faux suede yarn that I had, but any worsted weight yarn would work. Here is the pattern for the nest. Use a size H8 hook and work with 2 strands of yarn throughout.

Rnd 1: 6 sc into an adjustable ring and pull the ring closed (6).
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (12).
Rnd 3: [sc in the next sc, 2 sc in the next sc] 6 times (18).
Rnd 4: [sc in the next 2 sc, 2 sc in the next sc] 6 times (24).
Rnd 5: [sc in the next 3 sc, 2 sc in the next sc] 6 times (30).
Rnd 6: [sc in the next 4 sc, 2 sc in the next sc] 6 times (36).
Rnds 7-9: sc in each sc around (36).
Finish off. To make the nest look more natural, I didn't weave in the ends.

New Crochet Pattern: Dino Bath Mat

As part of redecorating my sons' bathroom in a dinosaur theme I couldn't find a bath mat that I liked. So I got the idea to crochet a bath mat out of cotton yarn in the shape of a dinosaur. It was a bit daunting and at times I thought I was going to have to scrap the whole project, but here is the finished product. I love it! The pattern will be available for sale in my shop in a day or two if you are interested :)

Number Towel Hooks

Now that we are expecting our third child I needed to add another towel hook in the bathroom. Okay, so I know that is not the first thing you think of when expecting a new baby but we're in the process of redecorating the boys' bathroom anyway :)

I really wanted these cute towel hooks from Pottery Barn Kids but I couldn't bring myself to spend $30 plus tax plus shipping on hooks (and they've since sold out anyway). So instead I bought some wood numbers from my local craft store and some wood pegs. My husband attached the pegs to the bottom center of each number and then I painted them. In hindsight, it would have been better to spray paint them, but it is freezing here and I can't spray paint in the house! The wood isn't very good quality so I had to sand some rough areas and you have to be very careful drilling into it or you will split the wood. For a few bucks I think the towel hooks turned out kinda cute :)

My favorite free crochet patterns: Cotton Hand Towel

I am in the process of redecorating my sons' bathroom so that it is a little more grown up. I found this fantanstic shower curtain at Target. It doesn't come with coordinating towels or bathmats so I decided to make mine own.

Because of all the bright colors in the shower curtain I chose neutral accessories. I had some brown cotton yarn left over from another project and decided to make a hand towel using this super easy pattern (it's the one for the striped cotton dishtowel but I made mine all one color so it doesn't have a stripe). I was worried that a crocheted towel would be too bulky, but this one isn't. I don't know if I did something wrong, but my towel was already 24" long by the time I got to Row 88, so I went back and ripped out 11 rows (i.e., I only made Rows 13-77) then followed the rest of the pattern from Row 89 on. I also didn't do Round 2 of the edging.

And I have an awesome idea for a bath mat ... more on that to follow soon!

Free Crochet Pattern: Mug Cozy

Here is a pattern for a mug cozy that has a bottom too, so it also works as a coaster! It will fit an average size mug that is 3" in diameter and 4" tall. See below for instructions on how to easily adjust the size of the cozy to fit other mugs :)

Materials:
- Cotton yarn
- Size H8 - 5 mm crochet hook
- Button that is 1" in diameter
- Needle

Rnd 1: 6 sc into an adjustable ring and pull the ring closed (6).
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (12).
Rnd 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times (18).
Rnd 4: [Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times (24).
Rnd 5: [Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times (30).
Rnd 6: [Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times (36).
Rnd 7: working in back loops only, sc in each sc around (36).
Rnd 8: sc in each sc around (36).
Now you are going to work in rows.
Row 9: ch 1, turn, sc in next 32 sc, ch 1, turn (32).
Rows 10-19: sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn (32).
Continue to sc evenly along the opening for the handle until to reach the top of Row 19 on the other side of the opening. Ch 18 (this forms the loop that goes around the button).
Row 20: Continue to sc in first sc on Row 19 and sc in each sc across (32).
Finish off and weave in ends.
Sew on button.

If your mug is a different diameter, you can easily make it smaller or larger by comparing the size of your work to the bottom of the mug after each round. After Rnd 4, place your work against the bottom of the mug to see if you will have the right size after Rnd 5. Or if your mug is larger, you may need to make a new Rnd 7 that is six stitches more than Rnd 6 (i.e., [sc in next 5 sc, 2sc in next sc] 6 times (42)). The bottom of the mug cozy will lay flat if you continue to make each round 6 stitches more than the previous round. Then, when you start making the rows up the sides of the mug, just leave 4 open stitches for the handle. For example, in my pattern Rnd 8 was 36 stitches so Row 9 was only 32 stitches.

If your mug is shorter or taller just adjust the number of rows that you make, fitting the cozy around the mug every so often as you work.

Enjoy!

Free Crochet Pattern: Apple Cozy

I have to admit that before Etsy I had never seen nor heard of an apple cozy! But I think they are so cute and very easy to make. Here is a simple pattern that works up in minutes:

Materials:
- Small amount of worsted weight cotton yarn in colors of your choice for cozy and leaf.
- Crochet hook sizes E and H
- Button that is at least 1/2" in diameter
- Thread and needle to sew button on.

With color yarn of your choice and a size H hook,
Rnd 1: 6 sc into a double loop start and pull the loop closed (6).
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (12).
Rnd 3: [sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times (18).
Rnd 4: [sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times (24).
Rnd 5: sc in each sc around (24), ch 1, turn.
Now you are going to work in rows
Row 6: sc in next 22 sc, ch 1, turn (22).
Row 7: sc2tog, sc in next 18 sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn (20).
Row 8: sc in next 4 sc, 2sc in next 2 sc, sc in next 8 sc, 2sc in next 2 sc, sc in next 4 sc, ch 1, turn (24).
Rows 9-14: sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn (24).
Continue to sc evenly around the opening on the side of the apple cozy until you reach the top of Row 14 on the other side of the opening.
Ch 20 (this will create the loop that goes around the button to close the cozy).
Row 15: Continue to sc in next stitch on Row 14, sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog twice, sc in next 8 sc, sc2tog twice, sc in next 4 sc, sl st in next sc.
Finish off and weave in ends.

Leaf: with green yarn and size E hook
Ch 9; sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next 3 ch, sc in next 2 ch, sl st in 2 next ch, working the free loops on the other side of the chain, sl st in next loop, sc in next 2 loops, dc in next 3 loops, sc in next loop. Finish off leaving a long end. Sew leaf to apple cozy. Weave in ends.

Sew on button.

My favorite free crochet patterns: Baby grab ball

Here is another one of my favorite free patterns. I have only made a couple of these but everytime someone sees one they ask me where I found the pattern. I made mine using a size D hook and Patons Grace yarn, following the instructions for the sport weight yarn rather than thread.

They are super easy to crochet but the assembly is a little time consuming. Here are some tips that may make assembly easier. When you finish each oval, leave a tail for sewing that is 12" long or so. You will use this tail to sew the oval to the cone and then join the cones together. Also, it may be a little easier to assemble if you delete rows 3 and 5 of the triangles. I'm going to try that next time because the triangles seemed a little too long and when you assemble the ball the points of the triangles all bunch together in the center. Finally, you have to be careful not to stuff the pieces too much or it makes it hard to sew it all together.

New Crochet Pattern: Chinese Takeout

Here is a sneak peek at a pattern I have been working on for almost one year! I'm so happy with the way that it turned out :) The pattern includes a take out box, bowl of stir fry that includes shrimp, broccoli and mushrooms, an egg roll and a fortune cookie! Yum!

The pattern will be available in my shop in a couple of days.

My favorite free crochet patterns: Foamies!

Just last week I was cleaning out my stash of yarn and other crafting supplies. I came across some Patons Grace yarn and thought about giving it away because I hadn't used it in almost 3 years. I'm so glad I didn't! I came across this free pattern. I can not get over how cute these guys are! They remind me of the scrubbing bubbles from the bathtub cleaner commercials.

At first I was hesitant to use a bath scrubbie that had polyester fiberfil in it and safety eyes. But they work great and my sons love them :) My sons never showed any interest in learning to wash themselves but they do now! And I am so addicted to making these and trying out new color combinations and faces.

I also love trying different patterns because I always learn something new. This pattern taught me a new way to make a bobble stitch.

Pattern Update: Fairground Food

I just finished updating the Fairground Food pattern to change the shape of the snow cones and add containers for the snow cones and caramel apples. If you've purchased my Fairground Food pattern and want the updated pattern for free, just send me a convo through Etsy and I will email it to you. If you could please mention the date that you bought the patterns from me that will help me find you in my records. Thank you, Anna :)
